Από ξένο τόπο, Ghazali, Üsküdar on Ancient Lyre & Oud
One of the most remarkable examples of our shared musical heritage, this is a melody that has travelled across cultures, religions, and borders. From the Eastern Mediterranean to Central Asia and even across the Atlantic, common people have sung the same tune, each in their own language, each embracing it as their own.
Known by different titles, including "Από ξένο τόπο," "Ghazali," and the famous “Üsküdar,” the melody appears in Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Jewish, Balkan, and American immigrant traditions, reflecting a cultural continuity that humanity often overlooks.
Arranged for the ancient Greek lyre and the oud, it retells the timeless story of love and longing with intensity, a story that belongs not to one nation but to all. It is performed by Theodore Koumartzis on the Lyre of Olympus, masterfully handcrafted in Greece by the LUTHIEROS family, and Nawar Alnaddaf on vocals and the oud.

🔎 Tracing the Melody Back
One of the earliest known recordings dates back to 1900 in Paris, during the Exposition Universelle, when a Jewish singer from Constantinople performed the song in Turkish, recorded by anthropologist Léon Azoulay as part of an early effort to create a museum of sound.

🇬🇧 🎶 Lyrics in English
My gazelle, my gazelle, my wound has healed, has healed.
The moon kept me company, my eyes, at midnight — then disappeared.
If you wish to fall in love, trade in silk,
For love, by God, my master, demands great wealth.
My gazelle, my gazelle, my wound has healed, has healed.
The moon kept me company, my eyes, at midnight — then disappeared.
