The controversy over the site reflects broader historical tensions tied to Islamic invasions of the region, which date back to the Delhi Sultanate period, when rulers like Sikandar Lodi and Ghiyasuddin Balban sought control over this important area. These invasions often resulted in the destruction or repurposing of Hindu religious sites.
