Facts about: Some of the issues behind Mozambique’s civil unrest

Mozambique is experiencing the most chaotic civil unrests. These protests have been a culmination of other relying issues in all aspects of the civilian needs and demands. The electoral results of 9 October 2024 have outraged many citizens whose demands weren’t fulfilled. Those when i quoted Frantz Fanon when he said “African unity can only be a job in defiance of the interests of the bourgeois” the means is well and clear if many of us know the real problem of the African economy. Mozambique over the years has been crippled with a number of pressing challenges forexample the aftermath of the 16 years civil war, that costed the country a huge sums of resources for reconstruction and obviously like most African countries they’re forced to seek for loans from the international financial institutions and organisations. Looking at this issue in the wider context, Mozambique is among the countries that have been indebted, debt default and also unfair terms of debt restructuring hider the progress of many African countries.

The protest movements that started initially on 21 October after the electoral results that many of the opposition leaders disregard and considered sham and uncredible. Venacio Mondlane an independent presidential candidate called for mass protests immediately after the results were announced when the Independent electoral commission announced that he secured 21% of the votes. Mondalane is mostly welcomed by the youth and youngster of Mozambique who constitue about 80% of the 34 million population country. Over the years there was a scandal that involved many of the ruling party memebers that saw $1.5 billion dollars being siphoned and mismanaged in scrupulously. The main electral concern of the youth is employment and fair opportunities. Many of the Mozambican youth have been forced to seek for better opportunities in the neighboring countries. The mineral rich country has aslo faced the problem of extremist insurgents in the northern region of Cabo Delgabo that is mostly Swahili speaking, though the protesters have also discredited the Rwanda troops deployment. In 2017, the ruling party managed to sign an agreement with the other opposition group. The oil reach northern region has established oil reserves of over $50 billion according to estimates. TotalEnergies and Exxon are among the major companies that will extract the oil. In 2021, TotalEnergies that was granted a project that costs $20 billion, halted its operations after it was attacked by the extremists.

The relic is that all bourgeois companies operating in Africa, haven’t solved the root causes of Africa. There only focus is making lucrative gains and leaving the general public just to linger in poverty and hush conditions. According to my analysis, I’m well sure that if the young can be lead in an equitable and transparent way, none of them would be demanding a change of government or even protest in the streets that has left over 70 lifeless. Recently on 26 November, 2024 — the outgoing leader Filipe Nyusi travelled to South Africa to have a cordial meeting with the oppostion leaders in order to eneure that normalcy and peace returns to the various towns that have been experiencing waves of protests. The opposition leaders were granted until December to denounce and challenge the election results constitutionally, though many of the times when opposition leaders challenge the election results constitutionally — it always turns out in favour of the incumbet. The situation in Mozambique has been alarming and i think its high time for the leaders to prioritise the masses and ensure that the nation doesn’t go astray.
