To make a long story short, the hand can pull you into the taxi booth, which you can still activate while unable to move for some reason.
After 2 goes at it, you will enter a level via hand.
This will deactivate the hand from being able to pull you out of pits, and pretty much everything that isn't that OB sand that makes your character slide around all weird.

And yes, the dream world has a break-down when you jump in its endless pit.
I just thought I'd show you that. :D
