切り出し七輪の製法（珪藻土切り出し技術）　Traditional Diatomaceous Earth Industry in Japan

石川県珠洲市（すずし）では、山林にある珪藻土（けいそうど：珪藻と呼ばれる植物性プランクトンが堆積してできた岩石）の地層から、職人が①ノミを用いて珪藻土の塊を切り出し、②その塊からノミなどを用いて用途に応じた製品（七輪や炉材など）を一つ一つ手作業で成形する、という伝統技術が継承されています。成形された製品は窯での焼成作業を経て完成に至ります。例えば、この製法により作られたものであれば、珪藻土を利用する珪藻土七輪・珪藻土コンロのうち、特に製法名を冠して、「切り出し七輪」「切り出しコンロ」などと一般的に呼ばれています。

能登・珠洲の珪藻土利用の歴史は、１０００年を超え、その間、能登・珠洲に住む人々の火のある暮らしを支えてきました。そして、地元のみならず能登・珠洲の珪藻土の優れた断熱性・耐火性・成形性などが評価され、火を操る素材として、その名は徐々に日本中に広まりました。特に、珠洲地区の珪藻土は、粘土質で素材をそのまま成形できる性質を有するため、世界的にも特殊な「切り出し製法」による珪藻土産業が発展しました。近年では、珪藻土の特性を利用した様々な製品が開発され、その用途は多方面に広がりつつあります。

最も原始的な製法である「切り出し製法」について、時代の変化により、多くの職人が現場を去りましたが、現在でも少数の工房・職人がこの伝統技術を継承しています。本映像記録では、主に、一人の熟練の職人に焦点を当てて、その伝統技術の一部を紹介しています。

◎　In Suzu city, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan, there is a unique traditional industry to manufacture portable charcoal cooking stoves (called "shichi-rin" in Japan) and refractory linings for the steel and ceramic industry using "diatomaceous earth" as raw material (diatomaceous earth is the remains of 　　12 million years old, sea-dwelling microorganisms that have decomposed into a predominantly silica-based substance).
Every one of these products is hand-crafted by skilled craftsmen and the skills to cut the blocks out of the bedrock of diatomaceous earth and form products from these blocks by using chisels have been inherited by local people from age to age. Although many workers have disappeared from this industry with the times, there are a few people who are still engaged in this culture at some workshops in the city.
In this video, we will introduce a part of this traditional industry, through focusing on the works of one veteran craftsman.
