This talk is a part of a series of seminars on "Steel research - A global journey" to mark the retirement of Sir Harry Bhadeshia, Emeritus Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, UK.

The rich field of metallurgy has been developed largely through experiments. However, in recent decades, many emerging tools of the digital world have been increasingly used in the research and education of metallurgy. Apart from highlighting Sir Bhadeshia’s outstanding teaching and research in virtual metallurgy, this presentation also tells the story of a kind, humble and resilient immigrant, a traveler, and one who has made the resources of the vast virtual world of metallurgy freely available to all.
