The Amazon rainforest is home to the world's largest number of living plants and animal species; an estimated 2.5 million insects; 40,000 plants; 2,200 fish; 1,294 birds; 427 mammals; 428 amphibians; 378 reptiles - these numbers are only reflective of those that have been scientifically classified. One in five of all bird and one in five of all fish species call the Amazon home. A 1999 study found that one square kilometre of Amazon rainforest contains 90,790 tonnes of living plants. The forest is home to greater than one-third of all known living species in the world and the Amazon River is home to the infamous anaconda, caiman, piranha, and the electric eel.
