A great day out in the North York Moors National Park with Mark G0UOK from the Guisborough & District Amateur Radio Club. Today we visited the club's operating base which is hidden below ground in a secret nuclear bunker. This is one of hundreds of disused bunkers located all across the UK. It's main purpose was taking measurements, monitoring and reporting after a nuclear blast had taken place somewhere in the North East area of England. All part of the cold war efforts and perhaps surprisingly this bunker was still staffed by the Royal Observer Corps volunteers until 1991.

The bunker is emptied of equipment and locked when not in use. However, there are both historic and radio themed open days and more details of these can be found in the links below:
