The nakshatras are the Indian form of lunar stations. They usually number 27 but sometimes 28 and their names are related to the most prominent constellations in each sector. They start from a point on the ecliptic precisely opposite the star Spica (Sanskrit: Chitrā) and develop eastwards. In classical Hindu mythology, the creation of the nakshatras is attributed to Daksha. They were wives of Chandra, the moon god. The nakshatras of traditional bhartiya astronomy are based on a list of 28 asterisms found in the Atharvaveda and also in the Shatapatha Brahmana. The first astronomical text that lists them is the Vedanga Jyotisha. The stations are important parts of Indian astrology.This 27-day time cycle has been taken to mean a particular group of stars. The relationship to the stars really has to do with the periodicity with which the Moon travels over time and through space past the field of the specific stars called nakshatras. Hence, the stars are more like numbers on a clock through which the hands of time pass (the moon). This concept is also described by Dr. Jessie Mercay in her research on Surya Siddhanta.

প্রাগেতিহাসিক কাল থেকে সময়ের হিসেব রাখার প্রয়োজনেই চাঁদ-পৃথিবী-সূর্য-তারামন্ডল দিয়ে পরমকরুণাময় সৃজক-নির্মিত বিশাল পরিসরের এ প্রাকৃতিক ঘড়িটিকে মানুষ ব্যবহার ক'রে আসছে । চাঁদ প্রত্যেক তিথিতে একেকটি নক্ষত্রের সীমানায় অবস্থান করে। পূর্ণিমার দিন চাঁদ যে নক্ষত্রে অবস্থান করে তদনুসারে মাসের নাম বৈশাখ, জ্যৈষ্ঠ, আষাঢ় ইত্যাদি রাখা হয়েছে । প্রত্যেক নক্ষত্রের আকাশস্থানের পরিমাণ (৩৬০ / ২৮ = ১২ ডিগ্রী ৮৬ মিনিট)। প্রতিটি নক্ষত্রের একটি বিশেষ তারাকে (সাধারণত উজ্জ্বলতম তারাকে) নির্দিষ্ট করা হয় এবং একে যোগতারা বলা হয়। কোন নক্ষত্রের আদিবিন্দু থেকে ঐ নক্ষত্রের যোগতারা পর্যন্ত ভূকক্ষের অংশকে উক্ত নক্ষত্রের ভোগ বলা হয়। শাস্ত্রে নক্ষত্রের অবস্থান এবং যোগতারা নির্দিষ্ট করা আছে। তাই প্রত্যেক নক্ষত্রের ভোগ নির্দিষ্ট। এর কোন পরিবর্তন হয়না।

In the Atharvaveda (Shaunakiya recension, hymn 19.7) a list of 28 stars or asterisms is given, many of them corresponding to the later nakshatras:
