Assam, as we know it today, has undergone significant changes geographically, historically, and morphologically. The identity of Assam, marked by the mighty Brahmaputra River, is a defining feature of this region. Stone Age sites in the Khasi Hills, various Neolithic cultures, sites and tools in the mountains and caves, and the existence of early Bronze artifacts all highlight Assam's ancient history. While mainland India experienced Aryan migration and the development of Iron Age tool cultures, Assam also witnessed these changes, albeit at a later stage.
The kingdom of Pragjyotisha, ruled by demon kings with Narakasura as its founder, not only produced one of the greatest kings but also immortalized this land by securing its mention in the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The lesser-known kingdom of Vidarbha was ruled by another powerful king, Bhismaka. The mythologically rich tales of the demon kings were so renowned and glorious that future rulers traced their descent from Naraka. Historically, the dynasty that later ruled this region was known as the Bhauma-Naraka Dynasty.
