The victory of the Janata Party in the 1977 General
Election amounts to a political revolution for India.
The Congress Party, architect of independence and
the government for the last 30 years, was swept from
office by a massive wave of popular indignation
against Mrs. Gandhi's autocratic rule. The new
government, led by 81 year old Morarji Desai, is a
coalition of four parties covering a broad spectrum of
political views and maintaining its unity will not be
easy. This report looks at the first few weeks of the
new administration and includes an interview with Mr.
Desai.
