Grief is a beast because it can feel like it is stalking us, waiting for the right moment to strike. When it does hit, it often comes unexpectedly, seeming like a savage attack on our emotional body.

Many people believe that grief is a time-limited experience, but I want to emphasize that grief is a lifelong process of managing change and loss. There is a saying that goes, "After the first loss, there is no other." If we do not pay attention to our feelings and distract ourselves from them, we may find grief lurking just around the corner, ready to pounce.

There is no way we can avoid grief. It wants to be accepted, not avoided. It is a part of the life experience and not meant to be tucked away or quiet. We befriend grief when we allow ourselves to feel the complex emotions it brings in. When we learn to live in tandem with it rather than avoiding it, we domesticate grief and can live along side of it.
