Born in New York, poet and translator Marie Ponsot was the daughter of a teacher and a wine importer. She grew up Catholic, a faith she maintained throughout her life.

Ponsot, who composed much of her body of work while raising seven children alone, frequently used challenging poetry forms including the villanelle, sestina, and tritina in poems inspired by home and urban transformations.

She received several awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts grant, the Modern Language Association's Shaughnessy Medal, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Prize, and the Poetry Foundation's Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.
