Bernita Elsie (nee Ohm) Brewer was born on March 21, 1933 in Winfield Kansas, to Conrad and Hilda (nee Mueller) Ohm, the youngest of their four children. Bernita graduated from St. John’s College in Winfield in 1952 and taught at Zion Lutheran School in Belleville, Illinois and Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Hayward, California. She then completed her degree in education at Concordia Teachers College in Seward Nebraska in 1957.

On December 27, 1957, Bernita married her St. John’s College sweetheart, Richard Brewer. Bernita taught at a Lutheran parochial school in St. Louis, Illinois while Dick completed his degree at Concordia Seminary. After his ordination in 1958, the couple moved to Portland, Oregon, to build and grow Ascension Lutheran Church. Bernita continued to teach until they were blessed with their four children: Sara, Andrew, Peter and Mary.

In early 1966, Dick received a call to Faith Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill, California. Bernita was a loving and supportive pastor’s wife and also had very active roles in the congregation. She was a Sunday School teacher, Christian Growth School teacher and a member of LWML. Closest to her heart, she led a women’s Bible study for well over 50 years, only reluctantly passing on the reins when she was 91. Many of those ladies were her closest life-long friends.

Bernita was also very active in planning an annual Pastors’ Wives’ Retreat for many, many years. This offered a time of support and encouragement for the wives of Missouri Synod pastors in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District.

Some of Bernita’s hobbies included gardening, reading, doing crossword puzzles, listening to the Oakland A’s games on the radio, sewing, and making quilts, finished by hand in her ever present large wooden quilt frame in the family room!

Bernita was the perfect traveling partner for Dick in all his group travel trips. While he led the groups with gung-ho enthusiasm, Bernita was quietly keeping an eye on their fellow travelers, making sure everyone was happy and where they needed to be.

Dick and Bernita were married for 63 years before his passing in 2021. Two of Bernita’s siblings, Arleen and Conrad Jr., preceded her in death. Her oldest brother, Rolland, is now 95. Bernita will be missed by her family: Sara and Marty Sing (Nathan, Hannah and Ramon Mendoza, and Naomi and Lucas Simmons), Andy and Sherry Brewer (Amanda, Elise and Chloe, and great grandsons Carlitos and Carmelo), Peter Brewer, and Mary Wolkenhauer (Emma and Victor Novaes Pires and great grandchildren Joseph, Clara and Julia).
