What is a MacGuffin? We have seen MacGuffin in many movies, including malayalam movies, but might have not recognised them as a MacGuffin. Probably because we didn't know what a MacGuffin is. So, what is a MacGuffin? (And what is not a MacGuffin?)

In fiction, a MacGuffin is an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself. The term was originated by Angus MacPhail for film, adopted by Alfred Hitchcock, and later extended to a similar device in other fiction. A MacGuffin is a plot device that either serves as a catalyst for the action in a story. It can be a goal, person, object, or idea the characters are in pursuit of, and it generally needs to be revealed in the first act. Typically, a MacGuffin will not have any identity of its own, and it can be interchangeable.
