Rachel Hanan, née Kahana, was born in the town of Vişeul de Sus in Romania in 1930. During the war, the area was under Hungarian control, and in 1944, with the occupation of Hungary, the authorities deported Rachel and her family to the ghetto in the nearby town of Vişeul de Sus. After about a month, Rachel and her family, along with the other Jews from the ghetto, were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Rachel and her three sisters were separated from their parents and brothers. Later, Rachel and her sisters were sent to the Duderstadt camp and, towards the end of the war, they were transferred to Theresienstadt, where they were liberated by the Red Army. After the war, Rachel and her sister Esther immigrated to the Land of Israel. Rachel married the late Shlomo Hanan, and they had children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
