A bipartisan bill to legalize online sports betting in Wisconsin is headed for more debate.

Senate Republicans are expected to caucus about it Tuesday, but not everyone is on board.

Under current Wisconsin law, online sports betting is illegal, with some exceptions on tribal lands. Now, there's a push to make it so that people can place bets from anywhere in the state.

During the 2026 State of the Tribes Address last month, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians Chairwoman Nicole Boyd said online gaming revenue will help not only tribal members, but all of Wisconsin due to significant tax revenue. That's because the proposed bill would allow Wisconsin's Indian tribes to administer online sports gambling, rather than outside companies like FanDuel or DraftKings operating on their own.

Some fear this will create a gaming monopoly in Wisconsin.

The Sports Betting Alliance represents five major legal online sports books. President & CEO Joe Maloney claims voters and outside sportsbooks are being left in the dark on the Wisconsin bill. Maloney doesn't want to see tribes get exclusive control of online betting and argues an open market allows for better pricing.

The bill would still allow for outside sportsbooks to work with Wisconsin's tribes. Supporters say not passing this bill will lead to more financial losses for the state to illegal gaming websites.

The bill passed a voice vote in the State Assembly last week. Senate Republicans plan to caucus the bill Tuesday, which will determine if the item will be brought to the Senate floor later this month.

FOX 11 reached out to the Oneida Nation to ask what the tribe thinks of this bill and if it believes Wisconsinites will benefit. We were told no one was available for an interview.

FOX 11 also asked State Sen. Kristin Dassler-Alfheim, D-Appleton, and State Sen. Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg, about their opinions on the bill. We did not hear back from LeMahieu, but Dassler-Alfheim's office emailed us this statement:

"Illegal sports betting is already happening, and legalizing it so we can harness that revenue to invest back in our tribes and our local communities is a no-brainer. I would absolutely love to see this bill pass the Senate and head to the Governor’s desk before we adjourn, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the majority to make it happen."
