A remarkable and innovative West Coast art scene came into being in San Francisco between 1930 and 1960. This is its story.

San Francisco: The Golden Age details the extraordinary development of the Bay Area art scene between 1930 to 1960. During that time, a great museum director, an enlightened patron, and a brilliant art school came together to create an environment that nurtured a host of innovative artists.

The 1940s and 1950s saw the emergence of a startling number of distinctive artists in the Bay Area including Clyfford Still, Claire Falkenstein, Jay DeFeo, Richard Diebenkorn, and Ruth Asawa. Working far from the art world power bases in Europe and New York, these artists developed styles of art-making that are only now being fully recognized but helped put San Francisco on the map as an artist destination.

Michael Duncan, a critic and independent curator, is a Corresponding Editor for Art in America. His writings have focused on maverick artists of the twentieth century, West Coast modernism, twentieth century figuration, and contemporary California art. His curatorial projects include surveys and recontextualizations of works by Pavel Tchelitchew, Sister Corita Kent, Kim MacConnel, Lorser Feitelson, Eugene Berman, Richard Pettibone, Alberto Burri, and Wallace Berman. He was the curator of the 2009 Texas Biennial and is curator of the forthcoming exhibitions LA RAW: Abject Expressionism in Los Angeles 1945-1980: From Rico Lebrun to Paul McCarthy and An Opening of the Field: Jess, Robert Duncan, & Their Circle.

Kristine McKenna is an American journalist, critic and art curator best known for her interviews with artists, writers, thinkers, filmmakers and musicians. Many of these have been collected in Book of Changes (2001) and Talk to Her (2004). Among the people she has interviewed and written about most often over the years are Exene Cervenka, Leonard Cohen, David Lynch, Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno and Dan Hicks.
