USS Mississippi BB 41 - "From Big Guns to Guided Missiles"

USS Mississippi (BB-41) had a distinguished and diverse career spanning almost 40 years. Commissioned in 1917, the New Mexico-class battleship and served in the Atlantic during World War I, although she saw no combat as the US Navy chose to send their coal fire battleships to Europe instead. During the interwar years, she was heavily involved in fleet exercises and training. She suffered 2 tragic turret explosions during her career - both of which occurred in her #2 14-inch turret (1924 & 1943) She played a much more active role in World War II, beginning with convoy escort duties in the Atlantic before transferring to the Pacific. There, she participated in major operations including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the invasions of the Philippines and Okinawa, providing critical naval gunfire support. After the war, she was converted into a gunnery training ship and supported weapons testing, including early missile development, before being decommissioned in 1956.
