Описание к видео Talking with Friends About Chronic Illness: Recurrent UTI Support with Dr. Sula Windgassen, Part 4

In this video Dr. Sula Windgassen discusses the following:

● When on the receiving end of unsolicited and/or unhelpful advice, it is important to acknowledge your own irritation and remind yourself that, although very frustrating, the person’s intentions are good.
● Being assertive and setting boundaries is important but can be challenging for some. It may help to formulate a response to these types of situations and practice delivering it so that, when the time comes, you are ready. Then, when you use them, assess how it went and adapt your approach accordingly. Alternatively, dissuading unsolicited advice can be sent in a text message.
● Friendships can sometimes become strained because of awkwardness around how to respond to someone suffering from chronic illness. In these cases, it is important to communicate openly with your valued friends but there may also be instances where a friendship is deemed to have run its course. Enlisting the help of someone trusted can help you navigate the different situations and how best to deal with them.
● Much like communicating openly with a partner, being honest with friends can help. Simply outlining how you feel and what you hope for the relationship can strengthen what’s strained.
● When patients are experiencing a loss of control, in addition to documenting what is happening, it can be helpful to identify one's personal values. These may be around being a kind friend, a productive worker etc. Then, you can list ways to honor those values that are currently within your capabilities.
