Gerdette Rooney discusses her travel book "Womadic Wanders: Stories of a Compulsive Wanderer" at Gleebooks, Glebe on 11/12/2020.


Gerdette Rooney lives in Glebe when not travelling the world solo with her rucksack. With a natural curiosity for other cultures, peoples and ancient rock art, she has had many adventures – and mishaps – over the years. She likes to avoid the more commonplace destinations in search of the ever-elusive tranquillity of nature and has stumbled on troubled places that proved challenging but interesting.

A radiographer by profession, Gerdette worked in Soweto during the apartheid regime in South Africa, in Baghdad when Saddam Hussein was in control, and also taught English for a time in Japan.

Compulsorily grounded during Covid, she compiled this collection of travel stories stemming from years of diary keeping penned in many hostels, doss houses and hammocks. It has been a virtual round-the-world journey for her reliving fond memories, whilst appreciating that some journeys are inward and that the writer’s life is not an easy one!

The stories will transplant you to her favourite continent of Africa – to the lush rainforest of Rwanda, the undulating dunes of the Sahara desert but also to the arid wastes of the Silk Road and the amazing icescapes of Antarctica.
