Hurricane Warnings as Debby strengthens in the Gulf

Tropical Storm Debby formed on Saturday afternoon northwest of Cuba, and is strengthening as it enters the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is expected to continue intensifying and could do so rapidly as it gears up towards landfall in the big bend region of Florida late Sunday night or Monday. Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the area, and heavy rainfall is expected over a large part of the southeastern United States. Accumulations are likely to reach 16 inches in parts of eastern Georgia and southern South Carolina. Debby may have a second chance of intensification when it re-enters the Atlantic, and could make a u-turn back into the east coast.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Carlotta recently peaked and is now on a weakening trend, mainly due to declining sea surface temperatures. The storm will gradually weaken and die off by the end of the week.

Tropical Storm Daniel formed earlier out in the Eastern Pacific, southwest of Carlotta, and is likely to last only for a short time and remain weak.

Other areas of interest are likely to merge and could become another tropical storm or hurricane in the Eastern Pacific.

An area of interest could also develop in the Atlantic later in the week, near Central America.
