The principle that underpins ethical research is that it is overall positive for the participants. An essential element of this is that a study feels positive, non-extractive, respectful and it is conducted in line with participants’ values.

There have been some ideas on how we can improve our research processes to be more ethical. These responses have often conceived of research ethics rather narrowly and not included wider responsibilities beyond the protection of participants. Often missing has been empirical studies of the preferences of research participants. This is a presentation that Joel Wambua did on Busara's agenda on ethical research at FEEDBACK+SUMMIT 2022.

In this presentation we share our framework for finding better ways of closing the loop in communication with participants and upholding ever-higher standards of ethical practice. We also present results from our first studies in this agenda. A qualitative study in which participants repeatedly asked for feedback and an experimental study which showed that giving participants feedback makes them significantly more likely to say they were treated respectfully.
