Coupang is now facing a tax investigation as well.

The National Tax Service has launched a special tax audit.

It is expected to scrutinize everything from domestic transactions to whether there was tax evasion involving money transfers with the U.S. headquarters.

The probe is being interpreted as effectively targeting Coupang founder Kim Bom-suk, who is based in the United States.

The National Tax Service has launched a tax audit into Coupang Fulfillment Services, or CFS.

CFS is a core subsidiary that operates logistics centers and warehouses nationwide.

The tax authorities are said to have detected signs of tax evasion through prior data analysis and have launched a special tax investigation.

About 150 National Tax Service officials have been deployed to secure documents.

What stands out is which departments are involved.

Not only the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Division 4, but also the International Transactions Investigation Bureau has been assigned.

This signals that authorities are examining not just domestic operations, but also cross-border transactions with the U.S. headquarters.

Looking at Coupang’s ownership structure, Coupang Inc. in the U.S. fully owns Coupang Corp. in Korea, which in turn fully owns CFS.

Because they are effectively financially integrated, the tax authorities are focusing on the possibility of “profit allocation” under tax law, where CFS’s earnings may have been transferred upward.

This structure means alleged tax evasion at CFS could extend all the way to Coupang Inc. at the top.

That is why the investigation is widely viewed as effectively targeting Kim Bom-suk.

The Democratic Party has scheduled joint hearings on Coupang for Dec. 30 and Dec. 31.

Kim has yet to say whether he will appear, but with a multi-agency task force probe, a police investigation, and now a tax audit, the pressure on Coupang is intensifying.
