Описание к видео Sir William Richard Gowers (1845-1915): A Century of Inspiration

Join us in commemorating the life and legacy of one of modern neurology's most outstanding pioneers. A century since his passing, Sir William Richard Gowers (1845-1915) remains a revered figure in the world of neurology, where his works are still looked on to with awe and admiration. His exemplary life in clinical medicine is marked by the number of original contributions to come from his mighty pen, and his overwhelmingly positive influence on the profession is preserved in the many charitable recollections of his life written over the past century. To those of us who care to look back and ponder on simpler times, the life and lessons of Sir William Gowers will remain a cherished memory, loved and respected by generations of neurologists to come, and treasured by all those he continues to inspire.

The authors of this video have been especially privileged to film some of Gowers' personal belongings (knighthood certificate, apprentice diary, sketchbook; 10:47-11:05) in the possession of his great granddaughter, Ann Scott, who currently resides in Brisbane, Australia. Scott's biography of her great grandfather, which was published by Oxford University Press in August of 2012, gives unprecedented insights into Gowers' personal and family life, and, with expert neurological input from Professor Mervyn Eadie (a Brisbane based neurologist and neuropharmacologist) and Professor Andrew Lees (who works in Gowers' old Hospital at Queen Square), presents a thorough synopsis of Gowers' contributions to neurology. The biography draws on newly found primary resources and Ann's own translation of Sir William's shorthand apprenticeship diary (10:56-10:59 left side of screen), and should be consulted by anyone more seriously interested in the life and influence of this exceptionally distinguished Victorian.

The biographical content of this video is essentially based on a careful study of both Scott's (2012) and Critchley's (1949) biographies of Gowers.

A number of images were provided directly by Ann Scott. Again, we are especially indebted to her for allowing us to film Gowers' belongings in her home.

A special coloured centennial portrait of Sir William Gowers was commissioned by the authors for the purposes of a quiet centennial ceremony held in Ann's home on May 4th 2015. These images belong to the authors.

The wonderful orchestral sound track to the video is 'shine on' by Ryan Sutton. We feel it suits Gowers' story nicely.

We thank anyone else who contributed directly or indirectly to the consummation of this project and hope our viewers will find the video informative and entertaining.
