Comment
The extent to which one suspects or sees a political message ‘behind’ this music is up to the listener. Generally speaking, the music is about loss, the loss of people, or rather: loved ones.
It should be noted, however, that most people die in wars, at least at the moment. Nevertheless, the piece is not opinion-forming, it is rather intended to stimulate reflection... Ultimately, it is about what everyone is afraid of: Loneliness. And where someone dies on the globe is ultimately irrelevant, the bad thing is that someone dies at all...through the influence of others...
Samuel Barber's Adagio, which everyone knows, was not originally conceived as an ‘anti-war- soundtrack’, but it comes into its own particularly well and intensively in the film ‘Platoon’.
