Packing strap is one of our major culprits, especially close to Walvis Bay, a very busy harbour town with an active and thriving fishing industry. We cannot trace back any individual packing straps to its origin, but the packing straps we find are also found on bait boxes used on long liners to catch tuna and sharks. Recent studies suggest that more than half of plastic rubbish in the Pacific Garbage Patch comes from the fishing industry, so we would not be surprised if we are dealing with the same negligence in our part of the world. Many of our entanglements could be avoided if those packing strap loops had simply been cut! 🦭
