In the following locations, switchboards, panelboards, and distribution boards installed for the control of light and power circuits, battery charging supplied from light and power circuits, and motor control centers shall be located in dedicated spaces and protected from damage:

• Indoor
• Outdoor

The following conditions of use shall be considered when equipment is installed indoors in a dedicated equipment space:

• Dedicated electrical space
• Foreign systems
• Sprinkler protection
• Suspended ceilings


DEDICATED ELECTRICAL SPACE
110.26(E)(1)(a)

Switchboards shall be installed in a dedicated space equal to the width and depth of the equipment and extending from the floor to a height of 6 ft (1.8 m) or to the structural ceiling (roof), whichever is lower. No piping, ducts, or equipment foreign to the electrical installation shall be permitted to be installed in this dedicated space since leakage of water or condensation could damage the equipment enclosure. Any space extending 6 ft (1.8 m) above the dedicated space shall not be considered dedicated space.
