Stucco weep or drip screeds where to attach.
Galvanized stucco weep screeds. Metal stucco bottoms.
Here is all you need to know about stucco weep screeds.

Folks, insects such as spiders, do no damage if they get on these metal screeds, bugs will hang out where they want, and they cause no problems.
The idea is to drop the weep screeds at levels that protect the wood mud sill and or plywood.
Why? Good question.
If wood gets wet then it swells and rots, now the termites move in, they eat the wet wood and love you for the neglect, and then they die and make a meal for the ants.
That’s when the trouble really begins so installing the weep or drip screeds is important.
Now you know.

We explain where and why and the other benefits of installing weep for drip screeds.
Few realize the importance of why these screeds are placed at least one inch below the mud sill? If you have wood siding, it’s the same principle.

Let’s say most rain falls vertically. The higher the elevation, the more wind and rain can take the rain horizontally.
Thus, if the metal screed or wood is not at least one inch below the mud-sill, the rain can and will blow upwards, causing the mud-sill or wood substrate to get wet.
When wood gets wet, it expands and, of course, can eventually rot.

With stucco walls, the wood expands, causing cracking in stucco.
The substrate also gets wet with wood and, again, can rot, creating an attraction for termites and mold fungus.
Mold is no joke.
Thus pay attention to details.

Metal rust when wet wood rots with rain is a simple concept.
In 1975, it became code to install weep or drip screeds for three main reasons.
One to stop the stucco from touching the dirt or ground.
Two, more importantly, to give the walls an expansion joint, and three, to provide us, plasterers, something to stop at.
There are more. We didn’t start installing stucco weep or drip screeds until about 1980.

FYI, my own home had the stucco touching the ground. Didn’t lose any sleep over it, as I knew why.
