With DC Studios entering a new era and preparing to reintroduce heroes to a new audience, anticipation is growing for the return of Nightwing — this time in the upcoming animated/live-action hybrid film Dynamic Duo. While casting for the next Dick Grayson remains unannounced, the first actor to ever portray Nightwing in live action, Brenton Thwaites, has some thoughtful and enthusiastic advice for whoever follows in his footsteps. During a conversation with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt for his upcoming horror thriller We Bury the Dead with Daisy Ridley, Thwaites lit up when asked what guidance he would give the next live-action Nightwing. It's clear that both his affection for the character and his understanding of what makes Dick Grayson so enduringly compelling are a big part of what he wanted to pass on.

Thwaites told Collider:

“Just have fun! It’s a wonderful character, he’s a guy and a superhero whose morals are his priority. The way he fights crime and the way he conducts his behavior is really important to him. I think that in the day and age of superheroes killing each other willy nilly, it’s great to have a character who is just a good guy and with a troubled past. It's just got so many colors emotionally that really feed a great character, but at the same time, his fighting style is so cinematic and so fun. It’s kind of the best of both worlds cause you got two superheroes with Nightwing and Robin. So for the younger guy who plays him: Enjoy it, have fun, and stretch and be strong.”

Thwaites’ advice arrives at a fitting moment: DC Studios is gearing up for Dynamic Duo, an animated feature centered on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the first two Robins. Set for release on June 30, 2028, the film explores the bond — and friction — between Batman’s protégés as they evolve into Nightwing and Red Hood. Directed by Arthur Mintz and written by Matthew Aldrich, the feature uses Swaybox Studios’ innovative Momo Animation, a hybrid technique combining CGI, stop-motion, and live-action performance. Swaybox is currently holding online auditions for performers to help bring the film’s movement-based animation style to life.

Produced by James Gunn and Matt Reeves, Dynamic Duo sits at an exciting crossroads between DC’s rebooted continuity and its experimental Elseworlds corner (hello, The Batman). Whether the film ultimately connects to projects like Supergirl, Teen Titans, and The Brave and the Bold remains to be seen.
