This is how I prepare my hardy hibiscus in autumn for winter. Simple and easy hibiscus care, just leave it, or snip it. Either way it's fine!

A few things to keep in mind:
The hibiscus could use the nutrients from its plump, green stems, so it would be ideal to cut stems after they brown completely.
The hibiscus dies back completely to the ground in colder locations. So, if you cut the stems down completely, you may forget where it is planted. This makes the plant susceptible to getting stepped on before it grows back in.
New shoots will grow in either from the crown of the plant or the very bottom of old stem, if they are still green. But the dried out, withered stems will not produce flowers ever again.
Patiemce is your friend! This plant takes seemingly FOREVER to come back, so give it time! Expect to wait until late spring to early summer for any signs of life, let alone flowers. Mine start blooming late summer, here in my zone 6a. Trust me, it's worth the wait!
