MetroTV, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared, “I am innocent, I am an honorable man, and I remain the president of my country” when he first appeared in a New York court on Monday. Footage showed the convoy carrying Maduro back to the detention center after the hearing. The court proceedings began around 12:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT), with Maduro and his wife, Cilia, both pleading not guilty to all charges. The Venezuelan president is scheduled to appear in court on March 17. Maduro and Cilia were arrested by US forces early Saturday morning after attacks in Caracas and other areas, on charges of “narco-terrorism” according to Washington. This action has been widely condemned by countries around the world, including many in Latin America, BRICS countries, and the Global South. The European Union and European countries have called for “international law” to be respected but have avoided directly condemning the US actions.
