My name is Robert. I'm 80 years old.
Every night, just before I fall asleep, I hear it. The door closing. It's been 37 years, but the sound never fades.
I was 43 when my son left. He was 17. He tried to talk to me three times. Three times I was too busy. Too distracted. Too sure he'd come back when he was ready.
He called once. From Oregon. Two in the morning. I asked why he didn't just talk to us. He said he tried. I didn't believe him.
That was the last time I heard his voice.
My wife Linda asked me to find him before she died. I tried. The letter came back. "Return to sender."
I don't know where Daniel is now. I don't know if he's married. If he has children. If he's happy.
But I think about him every single day.
I think about the doorway. The couch. The office door.
And I think about all the things I could have said if I'd just looked up.
This isn't advice. I don't have answers. I just wanted to say it out loud. Once.
I wasn't ready to listen. And by the time I was, he was already gone.
