New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has announced the state government will introduce a 12-month trial of pill testing at music festivals starting next year.

The move, which brings NSW in line with other jurisdictions and states across Australia, aims to reduce the risk of harm and death associated with illicit drug use at festivals.

The decision, announced by the New South Wales government, marks a significant change in approach to the issue of drug use at music festivals.

While the government has made it clear that there is no safe way to do drugs in NSW and that drug use remains illegal, it has acknowledged that the current approach is not working.

"We believe that this trial will lead to better information, particularly for young people, and ensure that they have access to medical professionals while out with their friends at festivals," Mr Minns said.

"Ultimately, our hope is that this trial saves lives."
