We live in a time of migrations and empires. Geopolitical conflicts, social unrest, and growing economic polarization are shattering critical social bonds, such as public trust and democracy. Western societies, especially in Europe, still seem to not be fully aware of the risk of political subalternity and economic servitude imminent in this new global context.

This Leibniz Lecture will build on the claim that Western philosophy, humanities, and education are in need of a drastic cross-cultural turn to make sense of the cultural, social, and political complexity of our world. Historical retracing of philosophical traditions will suggest that some discontinuity with modern philosophy is inevitable to expand the scope of philosophy beyond the Western canon. While this approach would imply reassessing the contents of most academic areas in philosophy, it also invites us to intensify exchanges with other disciplines in the humanities as well as with other forms of spirituality, science, and religion. Most fundamentally, it would challenge philosophers to revise key philosophical concepts, such as universality, self, and moral imperatives.
