California’s solar mandate is part of the California Energy Commission's initiative to lead the state toward a 50% reliance on renewable energy sources by 2030. The mandate requires that all new homes built after January 1, 2020, must be equipped with a solar power system to offset 100% of the home’s electricity usage. While the home can power certain aspects of the home with other energy sources such as gas, the goal is to generate electricity through photovoltaic (PV) solar panels for the majority of the home’s energy. The new building code applies to all single-family and multi-family homes up to three stories high, which excludes high-rise apartments for the time being.
