alexander background history,
Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC, almost 1,500 years before Genghis Khan. He inherited quite a bit of land and power, as well as a powerful army, from his father, Phillip II of Macedon. He had a high military status from the start and went off conquering the Balkans and the weakened Greek city-states. Then he conquered the even more weakened Persian Empire and its territory, eventually reaching all the way to Pakistan and India, before his soldiers had enough and refused to go any further. He then agreed to return and went back to Babylonia, and in one of the greatest speeches in history, he convinced his soldiers to go back to the east to conquer some more with him at Opis.
Alexander’s conquests took around 10 years and ended with his death in 323 BC. He was only 32 years old. Had he lived longer, perhaps he would have formed an even larger empire, but let’s not take into account any alternate history for this question.
His empire spanned over 5.2 million square kilometers of land, stretching all the way from modern-day Albania to Egypt in the far south and India in the far east. That was all of the “known world” at that time (of course this depends on where you lived at that time, but for the Greeks, that was all of their known world).
CHANGEZ KHAN, background history,
Temujin was born in 1158 AD in the Khamag Mongol tribe, a small nomadic tribe in the steppes of East Asia. His origins were much more humble than that of Alexander: his father was not a king or anything (although a tribal chief) and his tribe was very small compared to the Tatars or the Huns. His early life was full of struggles; his father had been poisoned, his tribe refused to acknowledge him as the next chief, his family was left to fend for themselves, was captured by the Tayichi’ud, and was enslaved by them (allegedly with a cangue).
Later, Temujin escaped and began his rise to power by allying himself with his uncle, Toghrul, and his sworn brother, Jamukha. Over time, Temujin and Jamukha became enemies and fought each other. Temujin was decisively defeated. In the following 10 years, his life was uneventful. Then, in 1197, he returned to power and helped attack the Tatars, emerging victorious. After that, he began the hard process of uniting the Mongols. But then, things went bad for Temujin again.
In 1201, Jamukha was given the title “Gür Khan” or “universal ruler” and formed a coalition of tribes against Temujin. However, Jamukha’s generals abandoned him and he was handed over to Temujin by his own soldiers. Temujin offered his sworn brother a renewal of their friendship, but Jamukha refused, saying, “there can only be one sun in the sky.” He was given a noble death.
Temujin, now Genghis Khan, then began his conquest. He had an army of 105,000 men in 1206. Despite the rapid growth of his empire and the need to stretch out his forces, his army only grew to 129,000 men by his death in 1227. His conquests included:.
