With so much debate about using Brake Clean on RV roofs because of its petroleum content, I want to share my findings and explain how to use it correctly.

To start, I’ve never had adverse effects on jobs where I used non-chlorinated Brake Clean to prep a surface. I’ve been back to inspect roofs three years later that I prepped this way and resealed, and they still looked great. I’ve also talked with several roof suppliers at RV industry trainings, and their stance is that it isn’t harmful when used properly.

Here’s how I use it: I spray Brake Clean onto a microfiber towel, wipe the area clean, then follow up with alcohol on a separate rag to remove any residue.

It’s important to note that Brake Clean contains Naptha, which is petroleum-based. Petroleum distillates can soften or make an RV roof gummy. If you were to spray Brake Clean directly on the roof, that’s when you’d run into problems.

Brake Clean isn’t my go-to for every job. Most of the time, I use a diluted mix of Simple Green and a scrub brush, then finish with alcohol before resealing. I only reach for Brake Clean on smaller areas or when Simple Green doesn’t get the job done and I need a little more cleaning power.
