Bródno Stare. Najstarszy gród Warszawy – to krótkometrażowa animacja na temat plemiennej społeczności zamieszkującej obszar dzisiejszej metropolii w czasach, w których nie było tu jeszcze miasta, a Piastowie tworzyli dopiero zręby państwa polskiego. W Lesie Bródnowski, na terenie warszawskiej dzielnicy Targówek, do dziś widoczne są relikty wczesnośredniowiecznego zabytku. Istniał tu najstarszy gród i najstarsza znana średniowieczna osada na terenie dzisiejszego miasta. Założenie tego ośrodka wiąże się z początkiem nieprzerwanej ciągłości osadniczej na obszarze współczesnej Warszawy.

Osada nad niewielką rzeką Brodnią, od której nazwę wzięła Puszcza Bródnowska, powstała w końcu IX lub początkach X wieku i funkcjonowała do wieku XI. Gród, który wybudowano tu w drugiej połowie X lub początkach XI wieku miał charakter refugialny - nie posiadał trwałej zabudowy i nie był zamieszkały, służył natomiast mieszkańcom za schronienie w razie zagrożenia. Gród spłonął w pierwszej połowie XI wieku, osada jednak funkcjonowała dłużej, być może aż do końca XI wieku.

Choć podstawą lokalnej gospodarki było rolnictwo, w osadzie obecne były liczne rzemiosła. Wytapiano tu żelazo z miejscowej rudy, odlewano metale kolorowe, wytwarzano przedmioty z drewna, kości i poroża, produkowano ceramikę oraz tkano materiały. Wykopaliska dostarczyły wielu informacji m.in. o diecie i metodach przechowywania pożywienia. Mieszkańcy ośrodka utrzymywali też aktywne kontakty handlowe z odległymi społecznościami, w tym z Rusią.

Na potrzeby projektu wykonana została pełna rekonstrukcja 3D osady i grodu na stanowisku Bródno Stare na przełomie X i XI wieku. Ujęcia filmowe w wirtualnej przestrzeni zrealizowane zostały w silniku gry Unreal Engine 4.

“Bródno Stare. The oldest stronghold in Warsaw” is a short animated film about a tribal community living in the area of the modern capital long before the city came into being, in the times when the Piast dynasty was just beginning to build the Polish state. In the Bródno Forest, in the modern district of Targówek, you can still see the remains of the early mediaeval site. It is here that the oldest stronghold of Warsaw and the oldest known mediaeval settlement within the city’s limits were found. The settlement’s foundation marks the beginning of an uninterrupted inhabitancy of the area, lasting till today.

The settlement over the small Brodnia River (which lent its name to the Bródno Forest) was founded either at the end of the 9th century or at the beginning of the 10th, and functioned till the 11th century. The stronghold built in the second half of the 10th century or at the beginning of the 11th was of the refugial type – it had no permanent buildings inside. The inhabitants used it to hide when their settlement was in danger. The stronghold itself was burnt down in the first half of the 11th century, but the settlement lasted longer, perhaps even till the end of that century.

Although agriculture was the basis of the local economy, the settlement has traces of numerous crafts. Iron for tools was melt from the local bog iron, other metals were also obtained. Various objects were made of wood, bone, and antler; ceramics and fabrics were also produced. Archaeological excavations provided insights about the locals’ diet and food preservation methods. The inhabitants traded with distant communities, including the Rus.

A full 3D reconstruction of the 10th / 11th century settlement and stronghold was made.
All the footages of the reconstructed site were made in Unreal Engine 4.
