STORYLINE:

Residents of Cuba began hunkering down early on Sunday as they awaited for the arrival of Hurricane Ivan.

In Havana Province the destruction left behind by Hurricane Charley just a few short weeks ago was still apparent.

Citizens of Baracoa, a small village 30 kilometres (18 miles) west of Havana, prepared to be battered again by high winds, heavy rain and pounding surf.

Many homes were left without roofs and in a very precarious state after Charley.

Hours before Ivan was due to arrive, people began taking boards from destroyed houses in order to use them as protection for other buildings.

People moved to the safer homes of friends or family to wait out Ivan, which was expected to hit the west of the island on Monday.

About 800,000 people across the island of 11.2 million had been evacuated by Sunday morning, with most seeking refuge with relatives rather than going to government shelters, the official Prensa Latina news agency reported.

An Associated Press Television crew watched dozens of families being evacuated on Sunday morning along the northern coast of Havana province, which is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Charley a month ago.

Charley caused heavy damage to homes and knocked out electricity for up to 10 days.

In communist Cuba, evacuations during natural disasters are obligatory and those who do not comply can be arrested.
