As we head into the festive season, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service are urging everyone to shop safely — especially when buying electronic gifts containing lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion battery fires are rising across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025, we recorded 156 battery-related fires — up 64 from the previous year and 80 the year before that.
Recent incidents include:
• A child’s electric vehicle fire in Aldershot
• An e-bike battery blaze in Fleet
• An electric scooter fire in a Southampton flat
• A scooter battery fire spreading to a bungalow roof structure
• A camera battery blaze that destroyed a conservatory on the Isle of Wight
These fires show how important it is to buy, charge, store and use lithium-ion products safely.
Safety guidance:
• Buy electronics only from reputable retailers
• Check for UKCA or CE certification
• Register products to receive safety recall information
• Use the charger supplied with the device
• Never overload sockets
• Don’t leave devices charging overnight or unattended
