The Dream of Gerontius (Edison-Bell, 1924) (9/16) - Dialogue

One of the distinguishing features of opera and musicals which I have found off-putting was is the setting of a dialogue to music. Conversations, especially casual ones or Q&As, between two or more people should be left well alone (just my opinion). Thankfully, Edward Elgar trimmed Cardinal Newman's long poem, and his orchestration goes beyond merely assigning spoken syllables to the limited frequencies and time segmentations that are musical notes set to a rhythm. Gerontius, almost child-like, tests the angel's patience with his many questions as he reorientates himself to his new state and anticipates his pending meeting with The Creator.
