Problem Question
Ariadne owns a factory which manufactures lawn mowers using an assembly line. The assembly line process is reliant on a conveyor belt that is manufactured by Belty Ltd, the only company that manufactures suitable conveyor belts. On Monday the conveyor belt cracked and the assembly line ground to a halt. Ariadne used her spare conveyor belt last month when the same thing happened. Ariadne has just agreed a lucrative contract with the Football Premier League to supply specially adapted lawn mowers for its football pitches for a year. Ariadne anticipates that this contract will increase her monthly profit from £100,000 to £200,000. She has also been told that if the lawn mowers are a success, the Football Premier League might be interested in buying Ariadne’s business for £10 million.
Ariadne telephones Carlos, the manager of Belty Ltd, and orders a replacement conveyor belt. She tells Carlos that she urgently needs the belt to fulfil an important contract. Carlos does not like Ariadne and so unnecessarily delays delivery of the new belt for a month. Ariadne’s factory is inactive during the period of delay. She could have made a temporary repair to the old belt, which would have enabled her to continue production for about a week.
The Football Premier League cancels its contract with Ariadne and tells her that they are not now interested in buying her business. Ariadne is very upset and suffers a nervous breakdown. Advise Ariadne.
