WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND TALENTS?

What is the difference between talents and spiritual gifts?
• Spiritual gifts are endowments by the Holy Spirit given to believers while talents are natural abilities that everyone has whether you are a Christian or not. Ephesians 4:7-12 tells us that Jesus gave gifts/ abilities to men. It goes on to tell us how these gifts were tools for equipping the saints for the building of the body. So unless you are born again, you can’t have access to spiritual gifts. Talents on the other hand, are influenced by genetics and environment.
• Spiritual gifts are received while talents are inherited/ innate and shaped by environment. We see in 1 Cor 12:11 about spiritual gifts;
‘All these are the work of the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.’

• Spiritual gifts are designed mainly to be used to serve God’s purposes for the building of the body (although they can also the benefit the believer and also in secular contexts for example Daniel) while talents can be used to advance personal ambitions. However, as believers our call is to do everything to God’s glory so we can and should harness our talents to promote God’s agenda 1Cor 10:31 tells us that even our eating should bring glory to God!
