Purandar Airport Crucial for Pune's Future Growth, Say Aviation Experts

Despite the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport, experts emphasize the urgent need for the Purandar International Airport to support Pune’s booming population, economy, and air traffic. Located just 40 km from Pune, Purandar will be faster to reach via the upcoming ring road than Navi Mumbai.

The current Lohegaon Airport, originally designed for 1.5 million passengers, now handles over 9 million annually and faces infrastructure limitations with only 10 parking bays and no support for wide-body aircraft. Aviation authorities project 12 million passengers by 2025-26.
Purandar Airport is expected to serve not just Pune but also regions like Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Beed, Ratnagiri and Ahilyanagar. Experts say the new airport will boost cargo movement, attract airlines for hub operations, and offer better international connectivity.

Converting Lohegaon to a full civil airport remains impractical due to its critical defence role. Hence, a dedicated greenfield airport in Purandar is seen as essential for supporting Pune’s long-term aviation and economic development.
