FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the illustration are made up by me.

1) SAYING
In TOEFL Speaking and in TOEFL Writing task 1 you need to talk about what another person says. For example, in TOEFL Speaking there is the campus announcement task where you need to talk about the opinion of a person regarding an announcement. In these tasks you should use synonyms for ‘to say’. This way you show ETS that you have a broad range of vocabulary and this will improve your TOEFL score. These are synonyms that you can use instead:

state

believe

think

remark

2) POINTING OUT
In TOEFL Speaking in the campus announcement task and in TOEFL Writing it can happen that the person says that one of his arguments is really important. In this case you must express that this argument is crucial for this person. If you do this, you show ETS that you know the vocabulary to do that and you also show that you have understood that the person finds this argument particularly important. These are verbs that you can use to do this:

point out

emphasize

highlight

stress

3) ARGUING
In TOEFL Writing task 1 you must explain the arguments of a writer and a lecturer. Each of the two argues for something. It is important that you express this by using different verbs. This is TOEFL vocabulary that you must know because you must show ETS that the person is arguing for something and that you can describe this using appropriate words. Use these verbs to express that a person argues for something:

argue

hold

maintain

claim

4) OBJECTING
In TOEFL Writing task 1 the writer and the lecturer have opposing views. Usually, the writer states something and the lecturer opposes this argument. Use these verbs to express that one person opposes the arguments of another person:

challenge

call into question

reject

refute
