Belur is a taluka head quarters in Hassan district of Karnataka state. The town is situated on both sides of river Yagachi, a tributary to river Hemavati.

Belur was earlier called as Belahuru,Belavuru,Velapura and was a famous town during the regime of Kadambas and Hoysalas. The world famous Sri Chennakeshava temple at Belur was built by Hoysalas.As per Hindu rituals,the idol of Chennakeshava was consecrated by Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana on 20th day of March 1117 A.D.

The Chennakeshava temple is a star shaped temple. Temple is embellished with the carvings of Row of friezes,bracket figures- female dancers ( Shilabalikas - celestial maiden) This is a most beautiful and big temple amongst all other Hoysala temples.
