Concussion Case Conundrum

Utilizing a case study approach, this presentation will focus on three important aspects of complex concussion case management. Naznin Virji-Babul will discuss the role of imaging in concussion with an emphasis on promising new research findings. Carol Kennedy will focus on the often overlooked role of
the neck in concussion symptom presentation. Finally, Bernard Tonks will address the assessment and management of dizziness in concussion.

Naz Virji-Babul, PT PhD
PABC member since 2014
Dr. Virji-Babul is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Physical Therapy, UBC. Her research addresses fundamental aspects of brain-behavior relationships. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in the area of neuroimaging, brain dynamics, and perceptual-motor function in typical and atypical development and in adolescents with concussion/mTBI.

Bernard Tonks, BScPT FCAMT Certified Vestibular Rehabilitation Physiotherapist
PABC member since 1986
Bernard graduated from the University of Toronto in 1986 and became a FCAMT in 1997. He completed the certification course in Vestibular Rehabilitation at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2001. In concert with clinical practice, he has instructed courses in vestibular rehabilitation throughout Canada as well as internationally for 15 years.

Carol Kennedy, BSCPT Queen’s (’79), MClSc (manipulation) Western (’10), FCAMPT, MSK
PABC member since 1979
Carol Kennedy has taught extensively in the Canadian Manual Therapy Course System, as well as teaching other cervical spine courses. She has been an Examiner for the National Manual Therapy Exams for almost 25 years. Carol has been the recipient of many awards including the Golden Hands Award, given to “an
exceptional orthopaedic physiotherapist.” In 2012, Carol was the assessor for the CPA Clinical Specialization Program in the area of MSK as well as contributing to chapters on cervical exercise for 2
textbooks. Carol has presented on cervical contributions to concussion-type symptoms on many occasions, including the Medical Symposium and Workshop at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Carol almost exclusively treats patients with cervical spine disorders at Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic, where
she is a partner.
