STORYLINE:
A United Nations official discussed in Damascus on Monday aid access and ways that would enable aid to reach all parts of Syria following the deadly earthquake that hit the country and neighbouring Turkey last week.

U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths held talks with Syria's Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad.

Griffiths and Mekdad did not speak to reporters after the meeting but Syria's state news agency SANA quoted them both as stressing that it is necessary that "humanitarian aid reaches all Syrians without any discrimination in all parts of the republic."

Almost one week after the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck northern Syria and neighbouring Turkey, the United Nations has acknowledged an international failure to help Syrian quake victims.

Northwest Syria relies almost entirely on aid for survival, but post-quake international assistance has been slow to reach the area.

The first U.N. convoy to reach the area from Turkey was on Thursday — three days after the earthquake.

Griffiths' visit to Damascus comes after he toured the Turkish-Syrian border Sunday.

"We have so far failed the people in northwest Syria. They rightly feel abandoned," he said.

"My duty and our obligation is to correct this failure as fast as we can," he added.
