The City of Orange is exploring the concept of tiny home villages as a solution to the affordable housing crisis. Kelvin Knauf, the Director of Planning and Community Development, presented the idea to the city commission, highlighting the potential benefits of these compact living spaces.

"That's a housing option that we currently don't have in Orange that we just don't have an ordinance to address it," said Knauf.

The proposed plan involves utilizing vacant lots and zoning them for tiny homes, which would be no larger than 400 square feet and priced between $100,000 and $140,000. Knauf noted that the most likely areas for these villages would be south of the interstate and east of 16th Street.

"Really give us another option for people like young professionals, for retired people, for maybe disabled people that cannot afford a regular-sized house on a regular-sized lot, but maybe could afford a tiny home on a small lot in a tiny home village," said Knauf.

The city has been researching successful tiny home communities across the nation, including a village in Pinehurst, which features four homes with more under construction. Knauf emphasized that these villages often come with amenities and are safe, gated communities attracting a diverse range of residents.

"There are some very, very nice tiny home villages around the state that you know have lots of amenities and they're gating communities and very safe and a lot of young professionals and retired people and disabled people are moving into those," said Knauf.

The planning commission is set to present the idea to the city council next month for a possible vote, aiming to "open the door" to this affordable housing option in Orange.
